The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) has recognized and awarded Cal Poly Campus Dining as a gold tier recipient for the 2020 Loyal E. Horton Dining Award for Catering-Online Menu.

Campus Dining was also awarded a Bronze in the Most Innovative Wellness and Nutrition Program. This award celebrates institutions who have implemented an innovative and effective wellness and/or nutrition program on their campus.

“It’s great to be recognized for the hard work and pride that we put into all that we do,” Campus Dining Assistant Director Russell Monteath said. “Every day our primary goal is to better the dining experience to support the success of all students who dine in our facilities, and this is a nice confirmation.”

The Catering-Online Menu is judged on the creative design, style and the usage of attractive images in the menu and web design. The menus must showcase a variety of food selections and various colors, textures, flavors, and temperatures. Both the menu as well as the web should exude a “wow factor”.

This is the third time that Campus Dining as received a Gold for its Catering-Online Menu. The first time was in 2014, then again in 2018 and most recently in 2020. However, the winning announcements for the awards this year were delayed because of COVID-19.

The bronze for the Most Innovative Wellness and Nutrition Program was given for Campus Dining’s ChooseWell Ambassadors. Launched in 2019 with the mission to make healthy eating on campus easier for students, the ChooseWell Ambassadors are stationed in the dining facilities to offer nutritional help and advice to students in person. The program offers a student-run, feedback powered solution that not only brings awareness to healthy options on campus, but also provides students with interactive nutrition education.

Loyal E. Horton, a NACUFS founder, past president and highly regarded innovator, is the namesake of the dining awards. The NACUFS awards celebrate exemplary menus, presentations, special event planning and new dining concepts, and provides an avenue for sharing ideas and creative presentations in campus dining services.
