SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA – Cal Poly Campus Dining, in partnership with the Basic Needs Task Force, is participating in Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
From Nov. 16-20, the Basic Needs Task Force will distribute 25 pre-packaged meals donated by Campus Dining. The free meals will be available each day from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Food Pantry, located at the lower level of the Health Center – Building 27.
“Approximately 27% of Cal Poly students experience food insecurity and another 12% experience homelessness,” Registered Dietitian Kelsey McCourt said. “This is obviously a problem here on campus and we are happy to help find new ways to support students, find solutions and bring attention to this issue.”
The Basic Needs Task Force will be distributing a variety of meals throughout the week, catering to students’ various dietary preferences and restrictions including vegan and vegetarian options.
The Basic Needs Initiative is also getting a new name, CP Essentials. The name comes with an updated website featuring resources available to students struggling with food insecurity, finances and housing needs.
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is a national program that aims to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Participants and volunteers spend the week holding a series of educational, service, fundraising, and advocacy events.
