Vista Grande to Retire After 43 years

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA &#8211; The Cal Poly Corporation has announced plans to replace the Vista Grande dining hall with a new state-of-the-art dining facility. Construction is scheduled to begin Summer 2016, with project completion planned for Fall 2018.
The current 16,899-square-foot building will be replaced with a new three-story, 35,000-square-foot facility. The new building will be LEED certified and feature integrated interior and exterior dining spaces for a one-of-a-kind Cal Poly dining experience.
“This is a transformative time for Campus Dining,” said Cal Poly Corporation Executive Director Lorlie Leetham. “With the new building project underway, Campus Dining will be better positioned to serve the Cal Poly community with a dining experience that lives up to the university’s reputation for excellence.”
Construction of the new Vista Grande complex is the first step in a master plan to upgrade aging campus dining facilities and the food program overall. The master plan was developed taking into account a growing campus, the latest culinary trends and university community feedback.
During the master plan’s project planning phase, the Cal Poly Corporation met with students, faculty and staff to get input on the project. There was an overwhelming desire for an inviting neighborhood location where the community could gather and enjoy delicious, healthy and sustainable dining.
With that in mind, the new facility will feature large patios outside with comfortable seating and fireplaces. Inside, there will be six different micro-restaurants serving a variety of healthy cuisine, as well as 350 seats including relaxing lounge areas with game tables and other elements that promote a social experience.
While construction is underway for the new facility, the Cal Poly Corporation has developed a transition plan to support the university’s dining needs. The plan includes renovating several of Campus Dining’s current restaurants, expanding hours of service and creating several new dining concepts. The Cal Poly Corporation also will purchase two new food trucks to help fill the dining gap. One of these trucks will be a mobile Starbucks, making a third option on campus for students to get their favorite coffee. All of these changes are planned for completion in time for the start of school in September 2016.
“Our culinary team is working hard to develop and finalize expanded food services for the campus community to ensure we provide a wide variety of dining options while Vista Grande is under construction, and as the master plan progresses,” said Leetham.
With an estimated $30 million price tag, the new Vista Grande complex is the largest capital project in Cal Poly Corporation history. The project is funded from Cal Poly Corporation facility reserves.

Cal Poly Corporation Begins Campus Dining Building Project June 2016

San Luis Obispo — Our own, Sage at Vista Grande received the Best Food award for their signature Korean BBQ Slider, served at the 27th Annual Afternoon of Epicurean Delights, held June 1, 2014, at the historic Chapman House by the Sea in Shell Beach.
This year&#8217;s event was attended by over 400 people and raised more than $58,000 for Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County (CAPSLO), a nonprofit agency that serves over 40,000 people annually and is committed to eliminating poverty through an array of community-based programs.
Restaurant manager Margi Braden and Sous Chef Darrell Janes, were presented with a commemorative plaque for their achievement at a ceremony on September 9, 2014, attended by university and CAPSLO staff.

Sage at Vista Grande Takes Best Food Award at 27th Annual Afternoon of Epicurean Delights

Students returning to Cal Poly this quarter will notice some drastic changes in stores around campus.
Both the University Store — formerly El Corral Bookstore — and Vista Grande Café got face-lifts, in response to requests from students and a desire to make the locations more friendly.
“We try to be really responsive to what the students are asking for,” saidCal Poly Corporation marketing and public relations director Yukie Nishinaga.
